G Plan E Gomme Mid Century Oak Tallboy Chest of Drawers Restored

A distinctive G-Plan E. Gomme mid-century tallboy chest of drawers, combining generous storage with elegant, space-saving proportions.

Believed to date from the 1950s and associated with G-Plan’s Chinese White furniture, the tallboy features a warm oak case surrounding seven original painted drawer fronts. Three shallow upper drawers are fitted with rounded brass knobs, while four deeper lower drawers provide substantial storage.

The original handles have been carefully restored, with the lower handles refinished in black to create a refined contrast against their brass backplates. Shaped wooden legs and brass adjustable feet complete the design, while the original E. Gomme G-Plan maker’s stamp remains present.

The timber has been fully restored to revive its natural grain and warm colour. The original painted drawer fronts have intentionally been preserved, retaining the character and history of the piece rather than being repainted.

Its tall, narrow proportions make it particularly suitable for bedrooms, dressing rooms or interiors where generous storage is required without occupying excessive floor space.

Condition

This tallboy has been sympathetically restored and is presented in excellent vintage condition overall.

The oak exterior and timber framework have been carefully cleaned and refinished, enhancing the natural grain while preserving the original design. The drawers operate as intended, and the original hardware remains secure.

The painted drawer fronts retain their original factory finish and show some age-related wear, including light marks, tonal variation and small areas of rubbing. These have been deliberately preserved as part of the piece’s authentic vintage character and are visible in the photographs.

The original brass knobs and lower handles have been restored, with the lower handles painted black as a considered contemporary update. The original brass adjustable feet and G-Plan maker’s mark remain in place.

Care

Dust regularly using a soft, dry cloth. For occasional cleaning, use a slightly damp cloth and dry the surface immediately afterwards.

Avoid abrasive cleaners, harsh chemicals and silicone-based furniture sprays. Do not place hot, wet or sharp objects directly onto the top; protective mats or coasters are recommended.

The original painted drawer fronts should be cleaned gently with a soft, lightly dampened cloth. Avoid scrubbing or using strong cleaning products, as these may damage the historic finish.

Keep the tallboy away from prolonged direct sunlight, radiators and excessive changes in temperature or humidity. Always lift the piece when moving it rather than dragging it, and adjust the brass feet carefully to ensure it stands level.
